Ibda'a Award 2004 – Print Journalism
A journalism student from Commits won a global award and landed his dream internship—a one-month stint with CNN in London . David Tusing was presented the Ibda'a Media Student Award in the print journalism category at a gala event in Dubai on November 30, 2004 . The prize was the CNN internship and he travelled to London in mid-2005 to do his all-expenses-paid internship.
Tusing won the award for his article on the metrosexual male—a look at how Indian men are not only getting a makeover but also acquiring a new label. "Metrosexuality is quite a phenomenon in our country today so I thought I should explore this trend in my Ibda'a feature," Tusing said. Commits was the only media college from the country that had three students in the core journalism and broadcast media categories on the 44-strong shortlist, said the dean, Ranita Hirji.
"This award proves that the education we are providing in media studies, especially in print and broadcast journalism, measures up to international standards," she said.
David George and Gaurav Momaya, with individual entries in the radio feature category, were the other Commits students on the shortlist. Entries for the fourth annual Ibda'a Awards, named after the Arabic word for creativity and set up by Dubai Media City , were submitted by more than 2,000 media students from many countries, including the US , the UK , South Africa , Egypt and the UAE. India , with 13 finalists, topped the shortlist.
The 10 categories this year were print journalism, print advertising, radio feature, television documentary, television advertising, animation, graphic design, analogue photography, digital photography and film feature.
